PlayStation 5 overheating or shutting down

Separate normal warmth and fan activity from an explicit temperature warning or repeatable shutdown. These checks focus on placement and observable behaviour.

Applies to: PS5, PS5 Slim and PS5 Pro; external checks only.

What changed in this update

Added page-specific comparisons, model limitations, and interpretation of test outcomes. These are editorial explanations, not a claim of independent bench testing.

Model and test boundaries

Use the ventilation and cleaning instructions for your PS5 revision. The original, Slim and Pro differ physically; do not apply a disassembly video for another case.

Work through the checks

  1. Identify the event

Write down an actual heat warning separately from warm exhaust or fan noise. Note whether power loss happens at startup or after use.

  2. Check placement

Let the console cool. Place it where intake and exhaust are unobstructed and follow the stand, orientation, and clearance guidance for the exact PS5 model.

  3. Inspect without disassembly

Check for visible dust around vents with the console off and unplugged. Use the applicable model manual for cleaning instructions.

  4. Evaluate a normal-use retest

If operation becomes stable, record the changed placement. If warnings or shutdown recur, stop. Do not use repeated stress tests or assume liquid metal needs replacing.

Choose the next check from what you observe

ObservationNext check and interpretation
Warm exhaust without a warning or shutdownKeep vents clear and record normal operation. Warm exhaust alone is not evidence that the thermal interface or fan needs replacement.
Temperature warning or repeat shutdown during ordinary useStop, let the console cool, and correct an enclosed or obstructed placement. If the warning returns during normal use, stop the retest and report the elapsed time and placement to a repairer.

A mistake to avoid

Do not use repeated demanding-game sessions as a stress test after a thermal warning. Do not replace liquid metal based only on fan noise.

What to record

  • The exact warning, if one appears
  • Time from a cold start to the event
  • Room conditions, placement, and visible vent obstruction

What the result can tell you

A shutdown without a temperature warning is not enough to identify a cooling fault. Keep the record open to power, software, and other explanations until evidence narrows it.

When to stop

Let the console cool after a thermal warning. If the warning or shutdown returns with clear ventilation, stop repeated tests and arrange an assessment.

Parts and repair options

Use these as candidates to test. Match the exact hardware revision before ordering a replacement.

Cooling fan

No expected fan operation or mechanical noise accompanies the fault. With no disassembly or objects in vents, record external airflow and sound. A repairer should check the fan and its connection. Replace only a confirmed failed fan with the correct model/revision.

Cleaning / thermal-interface service

Ventilation is clear but a genuine thermal warning returns. Inspect internal obstruction and heatsink contact professionally; assess rather than assume thermal material failure. Ask for a cooling-system service. PS5 liquid-metal work needs appropriate handling.

Power-path diagnosis

There is abrupt power loss without a temperature warning. Compare shutdown timing and warnings; keep power faults in the investigation. Do not buy thermal parts solely because the case feels warm.

Common questions

Does loud fan noise prove the PS5 is overheating?

No. Record an actual temperature warning or repeatable heat-related shutdown separately from fan noise and warm exhaust.
